Many former citizens of East Germany feel an ambivalent nostalgia for life under the socialist system.
A survey conducted in 2007 by the German Independent Opinion Research firm EMNID reveals that 73 percent of the “westerners” believe “easterners” are not at any disadvantage while 74 percent of the “easterners” say they are second-class citizens. Other figures, from the German Institute for Labour Market and Career Research, seem to confirm this inequality: showing unemployment rates in the East to be about twice that of the West with salaries 25 percent lower. The images (and interviews) in Ostalgia aim to bear witness of the open wound left by the wall in the lives of the former East Germans.
